Winter DIY Home Decor Blog Hop
Spring is still two months away, so I’m embracing our wintry weather and decorating our home with all of my favorite cozy winter decor. And did you see my recent front porch refresh? I love the new paint color of our door and all of the fresh pine greens.
Today, I’m keeping the winter decor train rolling by teaming up with some friends for a blog hop all about, you guessed it, winter home decor.
To all of my readers, both old and new, thank you for stopping by. I know how precious your time is, and I’m so thankful that you can spend some of it here with me.
A big hello and welcome to all of my friends who are popping by from Jennifer’s blog over at Cottage On Bunker Hill. I love her beautiful topiaries and can’t wait to make some of my own.
If this is your first time here at MWLS, welcome! I’m Jen. I’m a wife and momma of two who plans events by day and blogs by night. Winter Hurricane Candle Holder With Epsom Salt
This craft uses two of my favorite winter decor staples, greenery and candles! In terms of DIY projects, it’s as easy as they come. This hurricane candle holder with Epsom salt only takes a matter of minutes to make and is a beautiful addition to your winter decor.
Supplies
- Hurricane candle holders like these ones.
- Candles. I just shopped my home to find a few that weren’t being used. I love these LED ones. They even come with a remote so you can easily turn your candles on and off.
- Epsom salt
- Faux or fresh greenery
Tip: Thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales are great places to find old candle holders if you’d like to use an upcycled one to create your winter centerpiece.
How To Make A Winter Hurricane Candle Holder With Epsom Salt
1 . Add Some Epsom Salt
Pour some Epsom salt into the glass candle holder. No scientific measurements here. I just eyeballed it until it looked like the right amount.
At one point I placed the candle in the hurricane for a “trial run”. I decided it needed some more salt, so I added a bit more before moving on.
2. Trim And Layer In Greenery
Next, layer in some greenery. You can use real or faux, whatever you prefer. I had planned to use some fresh arborvitae clippings from our backyard, but with temps in the negatives on the day I shot this for the blog, plans quickly changed!
Luckily I had several small picks of faux greenery on hand that worked perfectly.
Clip the greenery to the length and size you like. Then anchor the greenery in the Epsom salt.
Repeat this step as needed and work your way around the candle holder until finished.
3. Add A Candle
The last step is to add a candle. For this DIY I used a battery-operated candle.
I love the cozy glow, and no need to worry about a fire hazard or no messy wax to clean up after.
Paired with some smaller candle holders and a few mercury glass trees, the hurricane candle holder with Epsom salt is the perfect centerpiece for my winter tablescape.
Speaking of tablescapes, see how I used this candle to create a simple centerpiece and style my newest cozy winter table.

This project is wonderfully beautiful, Jen!! How pretty for decorating for winter in the new year! It’s so simple with minimal materials which I love. This display would make such a pretty piece of decor on a table, in the kitchen or even on a bathroom counter. SO GOOD!! Thanks for sharing at Home Imagined today!
midwestlifeandstyle says
Thanks so much, Rachel! I love that I can keep it out all winter long!
Kathi says
Do you know if I clip juniper branches from the ones outside will they stay fresh for a couple weeks or longer? I love this idea! I have tall glass hurricanes from my daughters wedding that have been filled with shells and sand for years. Time for a change! Thank you!
midwestlifeandstyle says
Hi Kathi, I’ve found that when I use fresh clippings inside (or even outside for that matter) they do tend to dry out and get brown if they don’t get misted with water on a semi-regular basis. I know you can find real preserved clippings online. I’ve also seen some tutorials on other blogs for simple ways you can preserve fresh clippings yourself.
I hope that helps!

I had almost all the things needed for this lovely winter accessory so I made it yesterday. We enjoyed the soft glow sipping cocktails on our weekly at-home-date-night last night. Didn’t have any faux pine so I substituted white fairy lights for the greens (I love the way you did the greens!) and it was still beautiful. First I tried faux ferns but it didn’t look wintery, it looked like summer so switched them out. Since we live in Florida a winter feel is hard to come by if you don’t create it. Alas, it was our coldest night, in the 30s, so thank you for a great idea.
midwestlifeandstyle says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it. The fairy lights sound beautiful. I’m sure cold weather is hard to come by in Florida, but we are expecting another snowstorm later this week and some FL sunshine sounds pretty good about now.😉

I thank you for sharing!
I use 3 of the candles in the front of a laid fire in the fireplace that is ready to light.
They add the look of warmth to the room and make a bleak brick hole appear bright and warm.
Enjoying the fireplace either burning or shiny. Elson salt is cheap and other required items are in most homes.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
