Cracking The Code: How to Pick the Perfect Watermelon
Before you can make a watermelon crush cocktail, first you need to find the perfect watermelon.
But how do you find the best one? Here are a few tips to help you pick the sweetest and juiciest watermelon from the bunch.
1. Check its Shape: A nicely round watermelon means the sweetness is spread out evenly inside.
2. Find the Feld Spot: Turn the watermelon over and look at its bottom – the part that touched the ground. If it’s a creamy yellow color, it’s like a sign that the watermelon soaked up the sun and is full of sweetness. A pale or white spot might mean it didn’t get enough sun or ripen long enough.
3. Give it a Tap: Give the watermelon a little knock with your knuckles. Listen carefully – a deep, hollow sound is what you want to hear.
4. Check the stem: If it’s still green and curly, that means the watermelon was harvested too early. Look for ones with stems that are dry and brown for the sweetest and juiciest watermelons.
How to Make Watermelon Crush Cocktail
Once you have your melon, it’s time to make your cocktail! To start, cut and cube 1/3 cup seedless watermelon, removing the rind. Place your cubed watermelon in a blender and pulse until smooth.
Then pour the juice through a sieve to strain it and remove any seeds that may have snuck in.
Next, fill a cocktail glass with crushed ice. Pour in the strained watermelon juice and add 2 ounces of vodka and 1 ounce of triple sec.
Top off your watermelon crush with 3 ounces of lemon-lime soda. I prefer Sprint, but any brand will work fine.
Use a stir stick to mix your cocktail, then garnish with a slice of watermelon, a spring of fresh mint, and enjoy!
Mixing Larger Batches For A Crowd
You can easily make more to pour drinks for a crowd. Simply increase the amount of watermelon to make more juice as needed.
Then pour and mix each cocktail, garnish, and serve.
