Learn how to make your home feel extra comfy and cozy this winter with these five simple style tips.
The Christmas decor is packed away for another year. As sad as I am to take it all down, it always feels so nice to have a clean house and a blank slate. Since I spent the last few days making the change to winter decor, I thought today would be a good day to share how to make the transition in your own home. And it might be easier than you think! (Hint…some of my Christmas decor doubles as winter decor too!) Here are five style tips to make your home feel cozy this winter.
How To Style A Cozy Winter Home
1. Remove The Clutter
To me, too much decor can feel a bit overwhelming, so I like to start slowly by tackling one room at a time. I take down all of the things that feel Christmasy like ornaments and our trees. While I’m packing everything away I always get the urge to purge, so I also use this opportunity to donate or sell decor I don’t love anymore. It is a great way to clear out the clutter and to make a little money.
If you need more help getting organized, you can check out my picks for the best Christmas decor storage solutions [HERE].
2. Think Neutral
Using neutral colors is a simple way to ease out of Christmas and back into your everyday decor. And, since some of my favorite Christmas decor also doubles as winter decor, the transition is an easy one.
If you saw my holiday home tour, you might recognize these vintage ice skates. To give things a more cozy winter vibe, I simply swapped out the red plaid blanket and paired the skates with more neutral tones like cream, green, tan, and black. Easy, peasy! And as a bonus, I get to display my skates for a little while longer.
3. Use Greenery And Natural Elements
Winter decor doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple things like the greenery and pinecones in this DIY centerpiece are some of my favorite winter decor staples.
I also like to use small trees throughout the house like the ones here on my dining room buffet and my vintage dresser.
4. Add Cozy Touches
Wintertime here in the Midwest can be COLD, so decor like oversized throw pillows and knit blankets is the perfect way to instantly make any room feel warm and cozy.
And you can never have too many throw pillows or blankets, right? (At least that is what I try to tell my husband.)
5. Do what YOU love
And my last tip is…do what you love! Your home should be a reflection of you and filled with the things that make you happy. Trends will come and go, so the most important rule to remember to style the perfect cozy winter home is — there are no rules! When it comes to loving your home, Stacy Risenmay from Not Just a Housewife said it best with this quote,
” It is the old, the new, the hand-me-down, the collected, the worn but loved things in your home that make it your own.”
That’s it! I hope that these tips are helpful and show you that it doesn’t take a lot of money or effort to make the switch from Christmas to winter decor. Just a few simple changes are all you need to style a beautiful and cozy winter home. What are some of your favorite ways to add winter decor to your home? I’d love to hear your tips and tricks too, so be sure to let me know in the comments.

Hope you’re enjoying this season. I love your ideas. Especially to remove the clutter. I’m in major purging mode! Everyone is scared. LOLOL.

I’m about to be in purging mode here too! I love the idea of a new year and a fresh start. It feels so good to get rid of the clutter, doesn’t it?

I know as a blogger you have to decorate your home early for the holidays. But I don’t understand why it has to come down just days after Christmas. Christmas Day is the first day of the twelve days of Christmas that runs through Epiphany on Jan. 6th. Why not enjoy the entire season before packing things away? That said, your home always looks cozy no matter what!

I’m all about doing what you love! If that means leaving Christmas up until after the new year, I think that is awesome.
For me, it’s more about when I have the time to put it away rather than getting ahead or decorating for the next season. It’s such a process to pack everything up. I like to do it when I don’t feel rushed. Since I’m on break the week after Christmas, that is usually when I start to make the transition.

Jen, such a great post. Your home looks warm and cozy for the winter. I am with you on leaving the trees out. It’s looks so good for the winter months. I just love that pop of green in the house. Love your ice skating hanging up for the winter too. It’s the perfect winter decor. My favorite is your last tip “Do what you love”. It’s so important!
midwestlifeandstyle says
Thank you, Tammy. I love leaving the greenery up inside. It helps when everything is so brown and drab outdoors. I also think it helps so there isn’t such a stark contrast and helps me slowly easy out of the holidays and into the next season.

Thank you for sharing these ideas, I love your tips to keep things neutral and add a knit blanket! I always have a very difficult time transitioning my decor after Christmas. My kids love our Christmas decorations, so we just barely put our tree and decor away last week. There were styrofoam holly berries everywhere and glitter that had fallen off of our sparkly decor!

Thank you! I’m glad they were helpful.

These are such great tips! I love those old ice skates so much. And I learned to type on my mother’s vintage typewriter that looked an awful lot like the one you have! Your transition to winter decor makes your home so cozy, Jen!
midwestlifeandstyle says
How fun that you learned to type on a similar typewriter. I found this one a few summers ago at a vintage market. I love it! Thank you for stopping by today, Anne.

I just discovered your blog and I love it! Your home is so lovely. I struggle wether or not I should leave the greenery and little trees out, but I did this year and love it!
I too declutter this time of year. We donated 4 boxes and sold many items not used in over a year. Thank you for sharing all your ideas.
midwestlifeandstyle says
What a wonderful compliment. Thank you, Debi! I’m so happy to have you joining me here. De-cluttering feels so good, doesn’t it? I’ve donated several boxes and bags already and have some more I probably need to do!
Deb Lizer says
I have always been torn about taking down my greenery and wintery looking arrangements after Christmas. The snowmen stay out, but why must the greenery go??? You’ve given me permission to leave it for awhile, as well as my antique sled on the front porch!
midwestlifeandstyle says
Yay! I love keeping our greenery out a bit longer. Since it pulls double duty, there isn’t as much to put away right after Christmas, which means I’m not so overwhelmed with that task. And it helps the house feel not quite so empty until I can start putting things out for spring. Hope you are staying warm and cozy.💕
Kelly Radcliff says

Thank you, Kelly. There is always something freeing about starting off the new year with a clean slate, isn’t there? Cheers to a happy house and a clutter-free start to 2021!
