How To Set A Table For A Cozy Winter Dinner Party
For this month’s wine and cheese dinner party, my goal was to set a cozy and intimate table that would work for a festive New Year’s Eve party or a winter get-together with friends.
I also challenged myself NOT to spend a single penny. And I’m happy to say I did it, proving that you don’t need to break the bank or spend a lot of money to style a beautiful and festive table.
If you’re looking to host friends this winter or a fun get-together with some wine and cheese, here are a few tips for how to set your table for a cozy dinner party.
Shop Your Home
My first tip for styling a tablescape is to shop your home before you go out and buy anything. Chances are, you may already have what you need.
For this wintry look, I repurposed a lot of the same pieces I used in my recent gingerbread Christmas tablescape, including the dishware and most of the components of the centerpiece.
Not only did this save me time, but as I mentioned earlier, it saved me money! I enjoyed the challenge of styling old pieces in new ways. And because the theme of the table is more neutral and not holiday specific, I can keep this same styling all winter long.
Select A Place Setting
Next it’s time to pick out your place setting. One thing you’ll notice about any of my tablescapes is that they all include layers.
Using a mix of materials like these, woven chargers, and some basic white stoneware dishes is the perfect way to create a cozy layered look.
I love to use white plates because they go with everything. And, for this table, they help to add another wintry touch, don’t you think?
Some simple gold flatware adds a hint of elegance to the table setting.
And, it wouldn’t be a wine and cheese party without some wine glasses! You can place the glasses at each settting, or allow the guests can serve themselves by creating a mini wine bar on a bar cart or buffett.
You can also add wine charms to the stem of each glass and give them to guests as party favors at the end of the dinner.
Create A Simple Centerpiece
Next, create a simple centerpice for your table like a basket of greenery with pinecones or a pair of hurricane candle holders with greenry and epsom salt.
To make the transition from Christmas to winter I packed away my DIY gingerbread house centerpiece.
Next, I kept the same garland and twinkle lights draped down the center of the table and just removed the red frosted berries I used for the holidays.
For a more neutral look, I tucked a few white pinecone ornaments into the greenery.
I love to use mercury glass decor throughout the winter, so I also grouped a few trees from my collection to add some more height to the centerpiece
And to finish, I added some ambiance with candles.
To make the centerpiece more unique, I used a mix of candle holders, including some old glass bottles from the thrift store, mercury glass votives, and my favorite vintage brass candle sticks.
Add Some Wintry Details
The final tip to set a cozy table for a dinner party is to add some more winter details.
To tie my table together, I added more pinecones at each place setting with a spring of greenery. They complment the pinecones in the centerpiece and add a simple finishing touch.
Other ideas are snowflakes made from coffee filters or paper bags, DIY winter napkin rings, or hand made ornaments set at each plate.
