How To Easily Transition Your Porch For Fall
I’ve been (im)patiently waiting to decorate our front porch for weeks. But mother nature just wasn’t on board. Now that sweater weather has finally arrived, I can’t wait to show you the four simple steps I followed to easily transition our porch from summer to fall.
It’s not quite finished yet, but, as I mentioned during my fall home tour, this year is about taking it slowly and giving myself grace in our busy season.
I hope you can take some inspiration from our porch and borrow these ideas to decorate your own outdoor spaces.
Add A Seasonal Rug
Layer seasonal rugs to add some color and personality to your porch.
If you look at my porch throughout the seasons, you’ll probably notice a common theme. I love to layer rugs. Layered rugs help add texture and bring a bit of the cozy to your outdoor space.
This year I chose a simple black and white check rug for my base and added my favorite Hello Pumpkin rug from Antique Farmhouse on top. The rug is currently unavailable, but I found a similar one [HERE].
Refresh Your Planters
Refresh your planters for fall with plants like mums, ornamental kale, and seasonal grasses.
Sadly, my planters near the front door didn’t survive much past July. I guess that’s what happens when you are away on vacation during the hottest week of the whole year. Sigh.
But it was a great opportunity to start fresh for the fall with one of my favorite seasonal accents, ornamental kale.
It comes in several colors, is incredibly hardy, and can last well into November.
Next to the kale, I added a few white mums and some apple baskets. I just plopped the mums right into the baskets, plastic container, and all. The basket hides the ugly container and it saves me the hassle of repotting the mums. Win, Win!
For my two large planters near the front steps, I opted to keep many of the same companion plants from the summer, including the purple potato vine.
I love the deep rich color of the vine and the way it spills over the planter. The only new flowers I added to the planters was some small white mums and some seasonal grass.
Isn’t the grass gorgeous? And, since I reused so many of the same plants this fall I saved a bunch of time and money, which Mr. MWLS loved.
That’s always a bonus, right?
Decorate Your Door
Decorating your door for fall is an easy way to add charm and character to your front porch.
I made a beautiful DIY corn husk wreath for last year’s fall porch. It’s one of my most favorite projects that I’ve shared here on the blog, and a reader favorite too!
But you’re not limited to just wreaths. There are several creative and unique alternatives for seasonal door decor, like welcome signs, metal wall buckets, autumn swags, and door baskets.
I loved my DIY spring door basket so I decided to create another one for fall.
A DIY fall door basket is the perfect way to adorn your door, and you can make your own in just 15 minutes or less.
Quick. Simple. And beautiful.
Add The Finishing Touches
Add just a few finishing touches helps complete the look.
To pull our fall porch together I added some wooden lanterns with candles. I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos at dusk to show off their pretty glow.
I only used real candles for this nighttime photo shoot. (PSA…Friends, please don’t leave burning candles unattended.)
If you love the look of candle glow at night, these battery-operated flameless ones are an inexpensive and safe option.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a fall porch without pumpkins! I picked up just a few for now. I look forward to getting some more in a couple of weeks during our annual family trek to the local pumpkin patch. We missed out last year, so I can’t wait to go back.
