How To Decorate For Fall Using Earth Tones
I love the change of seasons. Most years, fall is one of my favorite times of the year to decorate for. But, if I’m being honest, I’ve been struggling a bit to find the motivation to trudge to the basement and haul up all of the totes of decor.
Maybe it’s the 90-degree temps. Or the crazy pace of life right now as we try to find our routine and juggle between work, school, and activities. Maybe it’s a bit of both. Whatever the reasons, I have been dragging my feet. Big time!
I realize that, for some, it may still seem early to decorate. And I hear ya! But in the land of blogging, I’m already running behind.
Thanks to a pep talk from some of my friends this week, I decided that it was time to rip off the bandaid and go for it.
As I started to look through my stash, I realized two things:
1) I have an embarrassing amount of faux pumpkins. Like multiple totes full. Will someone please tell me why I thought I needed all of these?!?
2) My fall decor looks different than it did a few years ago. Besides the ridiculous amount of pumpkins, I don’t own very many items that are just for the fall. But rather more staple pieces like brass candlestick holders, baskets, and neutral throw pillows that can be used all year long.
These items help to bring in texture and earth tones to create a cozy autumn feel without being “fall” specific. So today I’m going to give you a sneak peek at my plans for the season and share a few ideas and tips for how to decorate your home for fall using earth tones.
What Are Earth Tones?
When I think about fall decor, I dream of bringing the outside in and about rich colors like terra cotta, marigold, dark brown, and deep green. All of these colors can be found in nature and are considered Earth tones.
Last year my fall decor was filled with hues of bright orange, amber-brown, and warm gold. This season, I plan to use more traditional earth tone colors like terra cotta, and caramel brown, mixed with olive green, cream, and black.
My Fall Mood Board
Last year’s fall mood board is my most pinned post. So I thought I would create another mood board using this year’s earth tones as inspiration.
It’s filled with all of my favorites. Natural wood tones, fall florals, and a mix of textures to create the comfy-cozy autumn vibes that I love and crave this time of year.
Tips For Using Earth Tones For Fall
There are so many easy ways you can add earth tones into your fall decor. Here are just a few of my favorites.
Chunky Knits and Cozy Fabrics
One of the simplest ways to transition your decor with the change of the seasons is to use chunky knit blankets and throw pillows. Pillows or blankets in shades of cream, green, or brown add instant earthy vibes to your home and help to bring in those rich outdoor autumn colors.
Want to make your home extra cozy? Layer in other materials like wool, faux fur, or other soft fabrics.
- Terra cotta pillow cover with tassels
- Beige knit throw pillow
- Leather pillow covers
- Chunky knit throw blanket
- Boucle throw
- Handknit pillow cover
Natural Wood Tones
Incorporate wood tones throughout your home for the fall to add texture and natural elements. Items like dough bowls or vintage breadboards are great examples of everyday pieces that add both earth tones and a woodsy fall feel to your seasonal decor.
- Wood lantern
- Pillar candle stick holders
- Dough bowl
- Wood and glass cloche
- Bread board
- Coffee table tray set
Fall Florals
Swap out your neutral greenery and replace it with some fall florals. Use faux stems in shades of rust or gold for a quick transition from summer to fall. Or you can use dried florals like eucalyptus, wheat, or pampas grass.
Texture
Basic decor pieces like stoneware, woven baskets, or amber glass vases are a simple way to add texture and warm earthy colors to your home. They are neutral enough to be used year-round, and can easily transition from season to season.
- Woven tub basket
- Whitewashed stone bowl
- Amber bud vases
- Weathered terra cotta vase
- Wall baskets
- White concrete vase
Metals
Add accents of copper, brass, or gold to give a warm and cozy feel to any space. Or mix in some matte black for a modern touch that can be used across the seasons.
- Brass taper candle holders
- Black lantern
- Copper boot tray
- Gold lanterns
- Brass bowl
- Black taper candle holders
