See how I gave our front porch a refresh for the summer with some flowers and just a few decorative touches.

Front Porch Refresh For Summer
After what seemed like weeks of rainy, gloomy weather, the skies cleared, and I was finally able to spruce up and refresh our front porch for the summer. If you are a regular here at MWLS, chances are you have seen a few posts of our porch through the seasons, including last year’s summer porch.
Our porch is tiny, but I always strive to make sure that it is big on charm. It may not be my dream porch, but for now, I’m learning to work with what I’ve got.
All 28 square feet of it.
Decorative Touches
To maximize space, I kept our porch simple this summer with some flowers and just a few decorative touches. One way I like to refresh it each season is with layered rugs.
This year I also added some wood lanterns that I found at Hobby Lobby. I like the clean lines of the lanterns, and the wood tone ties in nicely with our DIY rain barrel.
The rain barrel is still one of my favorite (and one of the easiest!) DIY projects that we have completed to date.
Start to finish the project only took a few hours to complete and cost less than $150.
Not too bad for an afternoon’s worth of work! You can read how to make your own DIY rain barrel here.
Summer Blooms
The main focus of our summer porch is, of course, the flowers. The mixed pots near the front door were my Mother’s Day present to myself. I can’t be the only mom who does that, right?
I am in love with all things purple and yellow lately, so while browsing through all of the beautiful flowers, these quickly caught my eye.
And the colors perfectly complement the flowers in my DIY hanging door basket that I made earlier this spring.
The wall planters are several years old. The galvanized silver color was looking a bit dull, and their age was starting to show. So I used a can of matte black spray paint to give them a brand new look. Then, to finish the planters, I added a few faux fern stems.
In my front pots, I used a few different plants, including vining petunias. They are one of my favorite flowers to use in my summer planters. They take the hot Midwest weather in stride and bloom all summer long.
I also mixed in some purple sweet potato vine, dusty miller, and a few other companion plants.
I love how bright and cheery the porch looks. And after a long day of work, it’s always a welcome sight to see as I pull into our drive.
I hope you enjoyed seeing all of the details of our front porch summer refresh. Now that the outside of our home is summer-ready, it’s time to turn my attention to the inside! Would you like to see a mini summer home tour? Tell me what you want to see and I’ll share it here in a few weeks!
Happy Summer!
