Note: This post is part of a series about how we transform our outdated, builder’s grade bathroom into a spa-like retreat. All while doing it on a budget! See Part two [HERE], and stay tuned to the blog in the coming weeks for more updates on our budget bathroom remodel.
A master bathroom remodel has been on my wish list since we purchased our current home. Now, thanks to a little plumbing project gone wrong, it’s finally happening! Join me here on the blog for our DIY journey as we start our budget bathroom remodel.

Budget Bathroom Remodel
Today, in part one of this blog series, I’m going to be sharing the design board, and the inspiration for our budget bathroom remodel. Catch part two of our bathroom project [HERE].
Last week, I shared some inspiration for some gorgeous farmhouse floor tiles but, before I share more of the pretty stuff, let me tell you about the DIY that tanked and how we are turning it into a positive.
A DIY Disaster
Influenced by the great TP shortage of spring of 2020 (and out of sheer pandemic-induced boredom), we purchased a bidet. Or really, I should say, my husband purchased a bidet. Whether it was the boredom or a temporary lapse in judgment caused by the haze of COVID, we had reached the point of the quarantine where I said, “why the heck not?” I had (and still have) no interest in one, but if it made my husband happy, and could save us some money, then why not give it a try?
Historically speaking, plumbing projects have not been our strong suit. So when the installation was touted as easy, I should have known better. Easy is one thing it was not! The bidet leaked. EVERYWHERE. All over the tile floor. Behind the walls. Between the baseboards, through the subfloor below, and onto our living room ceiling! There were some tears (from me), some words (from my husband), and the bidet ended up in the trash.
On To “Plan B”
A few hours after, we were able to laugh about our little DIY- saster. Then we started to talk about what to do next. Updating the tile floor was already in our “someday” plans. Huge chunks of grout are missing, the tile is buckling in places, and it’s just not our style. And I would love to ditch the old light fixture and paint the gold oak vanity. So, a budget bathroom remodel moved to the top of our to-do list!

The Inspiration
To create a design plan for our bathroom, I spent some time looking for ideas on Pinterest. There are so many dreamy spaces I could have spent hours scrolling through them all. I want our bathroom to complement the rest of our room, so I used neutral bathrooms with gray accents as inspiration for our plan. These images from Juniper Home, The Lilypad Cottage, Wayfair, and My DIY Happy Home, are some of my favorites.
It’s All In The Details
Beyond replacing the outdated (and ugly) tile floor, there won’t be any major demo involved with our project. But, there’s still a long list of tasks to get done. Our to-do list includes:
- Adding a fresh coat of paint on the walls and painting the trim
- Painting the oak vanity and adding hardware
- Replacing the old light fixture
- Updating all of the hardware including the towel bars
- Installing new sink faucets
- Replacing the mirror
I’m honestly tired just thinking about it! It’s going to be a lot of work, but so worth it. I love seeing how everything will come together, so I made this design board to help envision what the finished space will look like.

Thank you, Kyla. I am a big believer in design boards. I like that I can see what the space will look like before it’s done, and hopefully help prevent spending money on things I don’t love.
