A Cozy and Classic Tartan Plaid Holiday Home Tour
The Entry
Welcome to my holiday home tour! If you haven’t guessed yet, this year, I used a blue, green, and tartan plaid color palette to decorate our home for Christmas. It’s a bit of a change from the traditional red and gold colors I used for last year’s holiday home tour, but I love the classic wintry look.
I’m always so sad when it’s time to pack away all of the Christmas decor. I feel like our home looks so bare. Does anyone else feel this way, too? Since this year’s colors are more neutral, I can leave most of the decor up all winter long. Then I get to enjoy it a bit longer! Just the thought of it makes my heart extra happy since Christmas is my favorite time of the year.
Our entry is styled with some of my favorite vintage pieces. This repurposed dresser was a thrift store find that I stripped down and refinished. It was one of the very first projects I shared here on the blog and still one of the DIYs that I’m most proud of.
On the dresser, I added a few more vintage finds, including some Christmas postcards and an old typewriter dressed up with some winter greenery.
To add to the wintry feel, I hung a chippy wood snowflake on our front door. I picked it up at a vintage holiday market a few years ago. I love how simple it is, and like the rest of my decor, I can leave it up once Christmas is over.
DIY Drop Zone
Since we don’t have a mudroom for coats and backpacks, I added this shelf with hooks to our entry a few years ago to create a drop zone. Most of the time, the coats and bags still end up tossed all over the counter or floor. But a mom can always hope, right?
Above the shelf, I draped a pine garland. It’s so realistic looking and one of my favorites to use throughout our home.
Then I added a bell garland that I picked up from the dollar spot at Target a few seasons ago, some flocked pinecones, and tucked in some twinkle lights. Because you can never have too many twinkle lights at Christmas! They’re so magical.
On the hooks, I hung an old pair of skates and a basket with a cozy green blanket tucked inside. And guess what? The skates will stay up throughout the winter too.
Are you sensing a theme yet? I’m all about keeping things simple after the holidays. The less I have to rush to clean up and pack away, the better.
Christmas Garland On The Staircase
I don’t think I’ve shared this view before. Mostly because I’m not in love with the gold oak woodwork. I intended to paint the railings before the holidays, but between a busy work schedule and our kitchen reno, I ran just plain ran out of time (and steam). Maybe I’ll get it done before next Christmas.
To help dress up the staircase (and detract from the gold oak stain), I used two pine garlands to create a classic Christmas look. It’s the same garland that I used on the shelf in our drop zone, and I used it on the mantle in our living room too.
I added in a few gold magnolia picks, and more flocked pinecones to give the garland a bit of color. Then, to finish, I tied on some blue velvet ribbons and wrapped some gold bells around the newel post.
I can’t forget about the basket on the stairs and the pretty tartan plaid throw blanket. It might sound strange, but this basket was one of the first things I purchased when we bought our two-story home almost six years ago. It’s the perfect place to hide all of the random clutter (like toys, and all of the bags and coats that don’t get hung up in the drop zone). It’s saved me from making countless extra trips up and down the stairs. Definitely, money well spent.
The Dining Room
Our dining room makes quite a few appearances here on the blog. It’s one of the rooms in our home that I like to decorate the most. And you’ll often see it shared as part of the monthly supper club group I’m a part of.
This month I shared ideas for how to style a festive Christmas tablescape. It might just be one of my favorite tables yet.
I used a tartan plaid scarf as a table runner and added a pair of snowy grapevine trees. Mine trees are several years old, but I found a similar style [HERE].
For me, it’s the details that make a table setting special, and these DIY napkin rings were the perfect way to finish my table.
Additional inspiration for our dining room came from the large paper snowflakes hanging from our chandelier. They were a post-holiday sale find from last year. As soon as I saw them I knew exactly how I would use them.
I love how they make the dining room feel extra magical and remind me of a snow-covered forest in the winter.
The tree in the front window of our dining room is one of three in our home. I love being greeted by the glow of its lights when I pull into our driveway each evening after work.
I used a mix of blue, green, and gold ornaments to decorate, and I even found some pretty plaid paper to wrap the gifts under the tree.
My friend, Stephanie, from Casa Watkins Living, helped me design some free printable Christmas gift tags to match this year’s theme, too. She knocked it out of the park, don’t you think?
Of all of the decor in the dining room, I may have saved my favorite for last. This beautiful sign is from Lauren and Chad at Between You and Me Signs. I adore the design and the verse, which is the true reason for the season.
The Bedroom
This year I kept things simple in our bedroom with just a few cozy touches, including a tree and some holiday greenery.
It took some convincing, but after years of begging, I finally talked my husband into putting up a tree in our room. We have a flocked one, and although it’s a bit messy, I love it. One of my favorite things to do each night is to snuggle up by the glow of the lights. There’s really nothing better.
On the bed, I used our everyday bedding and added a few green velvet pillows and a plaid blanket to give it a touch of Christmas.
It wouldn’t be a holiday home tour if one of our pets didn’t make an appearance. Our bed is one of Chloe’s favorite places to cozy up and snooze the day away. Of course, as soon as I started to take photos for the tour, she decided to crash the shoot.
