How to Create Patriotic Summer Door Decorations with a Basket and Flowers
Step 1: Add Some Potting Soil to Your Haning Basket
I’ve had this hanging door basket for some time now, and I love how versatile it is.
Even better, the basket is already lined with plastic, which makes it perfect for planting flowers and creating stunning summer door decorations.
Once you have a basket, use a hand trowel to scoop a bit of potting soil out of the bag.
Then sprinkle the soil into the bottom of the basket to build up a base, but be careful not to add too much.
You’ll want to save room for your flowers!
Pro Tip: If you don’t have any baskets to hang on your front door, thrift stores and garage sales are good places to find cheap ones that are great for DIY projects like this. Just be sure to check your hanging basket for plastic lining, or be prepared to add some before you begin to plant.
Step 2: Plant Your Flowers
Since our porch faces the west, it can get a little toasty in the summer.
And I do mean toasty!
Even with a large maple tree to provide shade, our front door still gets plenty of sunshine, so I picked out a mix of flowers that thrive in hot, summer weather to make my patriotic basket decorations.
I used white calibrachoa, red wave petunias, blue trailing lobelia, and some silver falls, but you can use any mix of annuals that you’d like.
Remove your flowers from the plastic pots and place them in the basket.
Then gently move them around until you find the arrangement you like best.
To create my basket I used the thriller, filler, spiller method for planting flower pots that my mom taught me years ago.
It works like a charm every time!
And the best part?
My patriotic summer hanging basket looks just like the expensive front door decorations at my garden center, but costs a fraction of the price!
Continue to add all of your flowers until your basket is full.
Gently pat the base of the flowers down to make sure they are firmly in place, and add more potting soil as needed.
In total, I used a mix of five different red, white, and blue summer annuals to fill my basket.
Keep in mind that the number of flowers you need may vary based on the size of your basket.
And voila!
Here’s my finished hanging basket, transformed into stunning summer door decorations for the 4th of July.
Isn’t it pretty?
I love how the mix of red, white, and blue flowers creates a festive and patriotic look.
And the vining silver falls plant adds the perfect touch, softening the edges of the hanging basket with a trailing effect for a more natural feel.
Step 3: Hang the Door Basket and Add American Flags
To finish your patriotic summer door basket, hang it on your door and add a few small American flags for some extra festive decorations.
I use these magnetic hooks to hang my summer basket and all my front door decorations year-round.
I love how sleek and sturdy they are!
And I don’t have to fuss with a door that sticks due to those old, clunky over-the-door wreath hangers.
And that’s it!
In just a few minutes, you have a simple patriotic hanging basket filled with pretty summer annuals to adorn your front door.
How to Care for Your Summer Door Basket with Red White and Blue Flowers
To care for your hanging door basket, water your flowers once a day and remove the dead blooms as needed.
If the hotter months, you may need to water more often.
Use your finger to feel for moisture in the soil, and if it feels give your flowers a deep soak until the water teachers the roots.
You will have beautiful patriotic decorations hanging on your door to enjoy all summer long!
Can I Use Faux Flowers to Make Summer Door Decorations?
You can replace the summer annuals with faux flowers to put your twist on DIYing decorations for your front door.
There is always a great selection at craft stores like Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. (And, if you wait for a sale, you can usually get them at a great price!)
Simply replace the potting soil with floral foam and then “plant” your flowers as instructed in the tutorial above.
