In the Midwest, we are blessed with all four seasons. I can truly say I love them all….but fall. Ahhhh, fall. She might just be my favorite. The crunchy leaves, rich, warm colors, and cool breezes. These are just a few of the things I love. When it comes to decorating for fall, I strive to make our home feel warm and inviting, both inside and out. So, today I’m sharing a few easy tips for how to style a cozy and welcoming fall porch.

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
I couldn’t agree more with this famous fall quote from L.M. Montgomery’s book, Anne of Green Gables. And today, this quote is the inspiration for a fall blog hop hosted by Cecilia at My Thrift Store Addiction. Ten of my blogging friends are sharing today, as well. They are linked below at the bottom of this post. I hope you’ll stop by each of their blogs to see their outdoor spaces decorated for the season.
If you are new and visiting me from Rita at Panoply, welcome to fall in the Midwest! I’m so glad you’re here. And to my returning friends, thank you for your continued support of Midwest Life and Style blog.
For my new friends, here is a little bit about me. I’m Jen. A born and raised Nebraskan living the good life with my husband and two daughters in the middle of the heartland. I began sharing my love for all things home on Instagram a few years ago and launched the blog this past summer as a way to expand on my passions. I’m thrilled to have you here.

Fall in the Midwest
When it comes to the weather, we have a saying here in the Midwest. If you don’t like it, just wait five minutes, and it will change. That’s true most any season, but especially in the fall. It can be cold with snow one day, and it can be 75β with sunny skies the next. Thankfully this fall, the weather has been (mostly) cool and crisp. Perfect for some fall porch styling!
How to Style a Cozy and Welcoming Fall Porch
1. Choose a Color Scheme
My first tip for how to style a cozy and welcoming fall porch is to choose a color scheme. This year I drew my inspiration for the fall from all of the warm, rich tones found in nature. During my fall home tour, I shared how I used deep oranges, golds, and shades of brown to make our home feel warm and inviting for the season.
To keep a consistent theme, I also used these same colors outdoors on the porch. I just think these colors scream fall, don’t you?
2. Create Layers
I always like to layer a few rugs to help add some texture to the space. [THIS] rug is great for indoors or out. Even though our front porch is unprotected from the elements, this rug handles our Midwest weather like a champ!
I bought the cute pumpkin rug last year. This one is currently out of stock, but I did find a similar one [HERE].
3. Dress Up Your Door
Each season I dress up my door with a wreath. Wreaths like my DIY corn husk wreath are a simple way to add instant charm and character to your porch space. I purchased a similar one last year from a big-box store, but it didn’t last long so I decided to make my own and absolutely love how it turned out. And the best part? It only cost me $30 to make.
If DIY’s aren’t your thing, this grass wreath from World Market is a great alternative, or try adding a pretty hanging wall basket.
4. Think Outside the (Planter) Box
When it comes to planting flowers, think outside of the (planter) box! I love to use unique items to plant my flowers in such as these crocks, apple baskets, or metal buckets.
The metal wall planters are also a great addition to any outdoor space. You can add faux greenery, or fill them with seasonal flowers and herbs as I did here.
Here is a closer view of an apple basket filled with ornamental cabbage. I picked up a few of these for last year’s fall porch, but you can find a variety of diffent styles and price points online.
And here is a closer look at my favorite crocks. They are a staple on my front porch each season.
I love to use both the smaller and larger size so I can mix and match different flowers and accent plants.
5. Add the Finishing Touches
And now, the fun part. My final tip for how to style a cozy and welcoming fall porch. Add the finishing touches!
Bring in mums, pumpkins, and other seasonal decor items that match your color scheme.
I also added corn stalks this year to give extra height and texture. I love how they tie the whole porch together and match my wreath.

Greetings Jen!
So great to meet you and to see your darling Fall Porch. Such a beautiful mix of colors and textures and so well balanced and anchored with the solid neutrals.
I would love to be living in a state with 4 distinct seasons ( lucky you) growing up in Idaho on a farm I still miss those days and the incredible earthy fragrances.
So great to share in this hop with you!

Yes, Fall in the Midwest can change in a heartbeat, Jen! We’ve got a warm week ahead, but know my plants could get frozen any minute; need to be transplanting! Love your DIY cornstalk wreath. Cornstalks are definitely the biggest bang for the buck, and when you live with them growing all around, we should be decorating with them! Fun to be hopping with you! Pinned and followed!

Isn’t that the truth, Lora? We had freeze warnings a few days ago, and now it looks like the summer heat is returning this week! And I agree with you about cornstalks…a perfect Midwest decorating staple!π

Hello, Jen! Although I have not been to Nebraska other than driving through on a cross-country trip, it is a pleasure to stop today and see your welcoming porch in its fall decor. Cornstalks – of course! And done beautifully in the wreath, so smart to create your own! I like the added stalk on the post too. The metal baskets on the wall and the apple baskets with tumbling plants and pumpkins really create movement and life. I’m happy to be on this hop with you, and wish you all the best in your latest venture of blogging. It is a circle of friendship like no other!
