Where to Find Mrs. Wages Products
The most common question I get asked whenever I share a recipe featuring Mrs. Wages® mixes is, “Where can I buy their products?”
I’m lucky to have several large Midwest grocery chains near me that stock many of my favorite items.
But if you don’t live in the Midwest or can’t find what you are looking for at your local grocery store, you can check the Mrs. Wages® website for a complete list of retailers.
You can also find many of their products online and have them shipped right to your front door using Amazon Prime.
The Best Apples To Use For Apple Pie
When it comes to making a delicious apple pie, choosing the right apples is one of the most important steps.
The best apples are ones that hold their shape, provide a balance of flavors between sweet and tart, and have a good texture after baking.
Honeycrisp is my apple of choice for these caramel apple pie bites, but the apples for your mini pies may depend on your personal taste preference.
Here are 5 more of the best apples to use for apple pie:
- Granny Smith: These tart and firm apples are a classic choice for apple pie.
- Jonagold: These apples have a good texture after baking, making them a popular choice for pies and cobblers.
- Braeburn: A balance between sweet and tart, Braeburns are a great all-purpose apple for dessert recipes like this one.
- Gala: Gala apples are sweet and aromatic, but they tend to be softer after baking. Mixing them with firmer varieties can work well for pie filling.
- Pink Lady: These apples have a nice sweet-tart flavor and hold their shape during baking. They can add a unique flavor to your caramel apple pie bites.
Experimenting with different apples can lead to different results, so feel free to mix and match to create your favorite flavor profile.
How To Prevent Your Apples From Browning
While apples that have browned are perfectly safe to eat, they don’t make the prettiest-looking pies.
To preserve the color of my apples and prevent them from browning I like to use Mrs. Wages® Fresh Fruit Preserver. It’s fast and easy to use!
To mix the solution, pour 8 cups of cold water into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle in 3 tablespoons of the fruit preserver. Then peel, core, and slice your apples.
Drop the apple slices into the solution and let them soak for 1-2 minutes. When done, drain the water off your apples, gently pat dry, and you’re ready to make your mini apple pies.
The Secret to Making Easy Apple Pie Filling
For this recipe, my secret to making an easy (and delicious!) pie filling is Mrs. Wages® Spiced Apple Mix.
The pre-made mix is a game-changer in the kitchen and includes a blend of sugars and spices that make it perfect for whipping up homemade applesauce, apple butter – and apple pie filling.
Whether you’re a seasoned home baker, just starting out, or somewhere in the middle like me, this mix is easy to use. Not only does it simplify the steps for making apple pie filling, but it also makes baking a batch of these caramel apple pie bites even easier.
To make the filling for your caramel apple pie bites, combine the peeled apple slices, Mrs. Wages® Spiced Apple Mix, and flour. Stir well to evenly coat your apples.
Once combined, pour the apple mixture into a medium to large-sized saucepan. Add the butter, and cover your saucepan with a lid. Then bring the spiced apple mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
Stew the apples until they are soft, about 5-7 minutes. And don’t forget to stir as needed…you don’t want to burn your filling!
When done, remove your apple pie filling from the heat, and set it aside while you prepare your pie crust.
Instructions For Making Caramel Apple Pie Bites
To begin, preheat your oven to 400℉ and grease a 12-cup muffin tin.
Gently unroll one of the store-bought pie crusts out on a lightly floured surface. (You’ll come back to the other one in a few minutes.)
Once your dough is rolled flat, use a large biscuit cutter to cut out 12 circles that are 3.25 to 3.5 inches in size.
Baking Tip: Take the pie crusts out of the refrigerator and let them set on the counter for 15 minutes to bring them up to room temperature. This will make the pie crusts easier to roll out and prevent them from crumbling and breaking.
Next, carefully press one circle into each muffin tin to form the bottom layer of your caramel apple pie bites.
Then spoon your prepared apple pie filling into each tin. I used between 1-2 heaping tablespoons per mini pie.
Simple Pie Crust Designs
To finish, roll out the second crust to use for the top of your caramel apple pie bites.
You can cut more circles to make a classic pinch pie crust or cut strips of dough to form a decorative lattice design.
Or my favorite, create a whimsical cookie cutter pie crust using seasonal shapes like flowers or leaves.
Baking Tip: Use a pastry scraper to lift the dough shapes after cutting and place them on top of your apple pies. The scraper helps to prevent the dough from sticking to your counters as you transfer each pie top to your muffin tin.
To finish, whisk together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Then use a pastry brush to lightly coat the top of each individual pie with the egg wash and sprinkle with Turbinado sugar.
How To Know When Your Caramel Apple Pie Bites Are Done
Once assembled, bake your caramel apple pie bites for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
If you’re unsure if your pies are done, check the temperature with an internal thermometer.
Your pies are ready when the temperature reads 195℉ or when the juices from the apples are bubbling through the vents of the top crust.
Once fully baked, let your pies cool in the muffin tin for a few minutes before serving.
Can You Make Mini Apple Pies Ahead of Time?
The short answer is yes! If you’re in a pinch for time, you can make part of these mini apple pies in advance. (Notice the keyword part.)
Prep the apple pie filling using the Mrs. Wages® Spiced Apple Mix as directed. Once done, scoop the filling into a covered food storage container and keep it in the fridge for up to four days.
To prevent the crust from getting soggy, I recommend you wait to assemble the mini caramel apple pie bites until just before baking.
Once you’re ready to serve the pies, roll out your crusts, spoon in the filling, and bake until done, as noted above.
How To Serve Your Caramel Apple Pie Bites
To serve your caramel apple pie bites, drizzle a generous amount of salted caramel sauce on top of each mini pie.
Then top off your pie with a dollop of whipped cream or a melty scoop of vanilla ice cream, and more caramel sauce.
How To Store Your Leftover Apple Pie
If you have leftovers (which I highly doubt), you can store these mini caramel apple pie bites in an airtight food storage container or resealable plastic bag in the fridge or freezer.
Fruit pies that don’t contain eggs, cream, or dairy products can be left unrefrigerated for a couple of days, but I prefer to err on the side of caution and keep any extras chilled.
Leftover mini apple pies will last up to four days in the fridge, and up to six months in the freezer.
To reheat, place your caramel apple pie bits in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds. Longer if frozen. Then dig in and enjoy!

Right? Who doesn’t love pie?!?

Can you make and freeze the pie filling? Then unthaw when ready to make the pie?
midwestlifeandstyle says
Hi KK,
I have not personally tried freezing the filling when I’ve made these, but from a quick search online I don’t think it should be an issue. I’ll have to try it and update my recipe with my notes.
