Tip 1: Switch Up Your Decorative Throw Pillows
One of the first things I change out in our home for the fall is throw pillows.
When you’re ready to start decorating for fall, swap out your everyday pillow covers for warm and cozy fabrics like velvet or knit like I used in our bedroom.
It’s such an easy thing to do, but I’m always amazed at what a small change, like different pillows, can make.
Don’t be afraid to play with patterns like plaid, floral, ticking stripe, or buffalo check, and use inspiration from nature to bring warm and rich colors into your decor.
Tip 2: Add Some Cozy Throw Blankets
One of my favorite ways to add a touch of fall decor into our home is with warm, cozy throw blankets.
Chunky knit fabrics are one of my favorites, but neutral fall plaids also have my heart.
I like to find different ways to display them as I did in our entry for my fall home tour.
My favorite DIY vintage dresser also doubles as storage for extra blankets and linens, too!
Tip 3: Bring The Outdoors In
Bringing elements of the outdoors in is a budget-friendly way to prep your home for the arrival of autumn.
Add faux leaves or other fall stems to a woven basket, old amber jug, or vintage dough bowl.
Acorns and pinecones also make great fall fillers.
Or make a centerpiece with faux artichokes and magnolia leaves to display in your dining room or on a console table.
Tip 4: Change Out Your Wreaths
Swapping out your wreaths is another quick and simple way to transition your home from summer to fall decor.
This wreath hanging on an old bar door in our dining room is one of my favorites.
And this wheat wreath in our bedroom adds color, texture, and a cozy fall feeling to the space.
Tip 5: Add Some Seasonal Artwork
Seasonal fall artwork can quickly help transform any room in your room.
This wooden sign is from my friend Brittany at Currently Chic Boutique.
I have several of her pieces, but this one is my absolute favorite I love to display every year when I decorate our home for fall.
Etsy is also a great place to look for inexpensive downloadable fall artwork.
Or, if you’re feeling crafty, you can DIY some of your own.
Tip 6: Accessorize With Warm Tones
For a cozy fall feel, decorate with decor that has warm tones.
You can also add touches of fall to your home with vintage decor.
Amber bottles, vintage brass candlesticks, wicker baskets, wood crates, and aged copper accents are all great examples of items you can use.
(P.s. If you love vintage decor as much as I do, don’t miss my list of the best 15 things to buy at flea markets and antique stores.)
Tip 7: Prep Your Porch
And don’t forget about your porch!
Even if you’re not ready for mums and pumpkins yet, there are a few simple things you can do now to create a cozy and inviting front porch for fall.
If you have a small front porch like we do, a simple wreath like this DIY corn husk wreath is a fun way to welcome the season and guests to your home.
Or, for something a bit different, create a door basket with fall foliage.
Layered rugs are another one of my favorite porch looks.
I like to keep the larger area rug out year-round and just replace the smaller doormat based on the season.
You can also start to prep your fall planters!
Companion plants like sweet potato vines can be reused from your summer pots to help transition your porch to fall, and they look beautiful paired with cabbage and other fall ornamentals.
Or, if you prefer a more low-maintenance option, try making some DIY pumpkin topiaries!
